Farmers Markets’ Underbelly
Ann-Marie Vazzano
A recent study of every farmers market in the Bronx found they aren’t all that and a bag of potatoes. According to Pacific Standard, which reported on the study, the farmers markets in the study were essentially “boutiques” that offer more exotic produce at higher prices than supermarkets. To boot, the study showed that many of the products sold at farmers markets aren’t that good for your health (think pies, cakes, cookies and jams). In addition, the markets offered 26.4 fewer fresh vegetables and fruits on average than grocery stores.
