Ann-Marie Vazzano
Super Bowl spending is expected to rise this year, according to the National Retail Federation. An estimated 184 million people were expected to watch the game, with the average viewer spending $77.88—a 14% increase over last year’s $68.27. What are they buying? Food, new TVs, athletic wear and decorations, among other things, spending a grand total of $14.3 billion.
Of the 75.8% who planned to watch the game, nearly 80% planned to purchase food and beverages, 10.8% planned to buy team apparel or accessories, and 8.8% planned to splurge on new TVs. Nearly half of viewers (46.8%) say that the game itself is the most important part of the day, but 41.3% said that the most important parts for them are the commercials and hanging out with friends and family.
